In a region like far North-West Victoria, the challenge of distance is something we live with every day, especially when it comes to accessing vital healthcare. That’s why the Rotary Club of Mildura Deakin was proud to support the development of the Dr Julie Zrna Centre, a project that brings comfort and care closer to home for cancer patients and their families.

When the opportunity arose in 2019 to contribute to this important initiative, our club didn’t hesitate. We knew firsthand how many people in our community had faced the hardship of travelling to Melbourne, Bendigo, or Adelaide for treatment – often for days or weeks at a time. The opening of the Icon Cancer Centre in Mildura in 2022 was a turning point, offering world-class cancer care right here in our backyard.
But for those living in surrounding towns and rural areas, even local treatment can come with significant costs, especially for accommodation and travel. That’s where the Dr Julie Zrna Centre makes a real difference. This 10-apartment facility, featuring one – & two-bedroom units, provides affordable, comfortable accommodation for patients and their carers, allowing them to stay close to the care they need and focus on what matters most: recovery.
In May 2025, after years of dedicated fundraising, our club proudly donated $50,000 to the Centre. This incredible contribution was made possible through community-driven events like Mildura’s Longest Lunch and our Giving Back Hampers.

Rotary Partnerships
And sometimes, generosity comes from the most unexpected places. In 2024, we hosted a group known as The Flying Rotarians – international visitors attending the Rotary International Conference in Melbourne who wanted to explore more of Australia. We welcomed them with a true outback experience, complete with a camp oven meal. That evening sparked heartfelt conversations about healthcare in regional areas, leading to a generous donation from the group. Later, we received another contribution from the Rotary Club of Seabrook in Texas, USA – proof that a simple “g’day” and a warm welcome can lead to extraordinary outcomes.

Community Impact
Knowing that our efforts are helping ease the burden for families navigating cancer treatment is deeply rewarding. We’re incredibly proud of this contribution, which reflects the compassion of our community and the unwavering commitment of our members.
